Maltese are very nice dogs. Make sure if you are going to get one to check on its background. Is it AKC registered? (if you live in the US) What kind of health guarantee does it have? (my guarantee for Shih Tzus is lifetime on genetic defects.) You need to see the parents, the living environment, the vet records, references on other people who have purchase a puppy from them, etc.

Now, when it comes to the expenses, the puppy should already come with the first, and possibly the second set of shots. That would mean you would only have the third set, including rabies to go. Then you wouldn't need shot until the following year. That is unless the puppy gets sick. (Always keep about $200 in a savings account just in case the puppy does get sick as an emergency fund!) The best way to help keep your puppy from getting sick it to buy a high quality puppy food, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul, etc. are all very good foods. Realize they may cost more to begin with, but it will save you money because your dog will be healthier.

Next, when it comes to grooming. As long as you brush your dog daily, you won't need to go to the groomer more than once every 4 - 6 weeks for a trim. Many quality groomers (and even Vets) will show you how to maintain your dog閳ユ獨 ear hair in between visits. And the price you are seeing for a groomer sounds a little high to me. I usually pay about $30 for a wash, trim of the nails and coat, and their hair put up. Check around and make sure you get references for the groomer too.

Good luck! You sound like you have really thought this through!

Try an atlantic maltese could be cheaper!!!...The ears don't need to be clipped and you can learn to do the grooming yourself the other expenses are pretty much fixed.

I'm pretty sure if you're careful and get the right stuff, you can do that stuff by yourself.

Check Petco or Petsmart or another local pet store for the things you need for grooming. Good luck, I hope you find the right puppy for you! =D

It's the breed of dog the maltese is a high maintenance dog for show dogs and breeders. But if you want one for pet purposes you don't have to jump through all those hoops to own one. I would suggest reading about the breed and the normal upkeep as in vet visits, food and so on. You don't need three month vet visits unless you are showing your dog or wanting to breed it. If you just want a pet then the normal six month to one year vet visit is the only necessary medical expense. But be warned, that most purebred dogs do develop problems from the breeding process. This means that the blood line may have some if it's siblings blood, which means interbreeding and that can mean problems with hip dysplasia as well as other genetic problems. I think what you should do is some research on the care of the breed instead. If I wanted a maltese, I would think about the food bill, vet bill and toys, some of the upkeep listed on dogs are not totally necessary, unless you are a perfectionist and want your dog to look like those on TV and in pictures. Or you are going to show the dog.

my mother in law has 2 maltese and first of all, 800 is very in expensive becuase hers were each 2,000 and they rarely sell for less than 1,000. They are extreamly expensive. they get their hair and nails trimed once a month, but she has to brush them once a week or else their hair will be a mess. i was actually shopping for a maltese about 4 months ago but then i realized all of the expenses and i decided to wait till i made more money. it does cost about 40 dollars to get them groomed, and their food is very expensive too becuase they require the real expensive quality food.

I would reccomend to think it over, or maybe choose a puppy that is less expensive and not as high maintnence. their are plenty of cute lap dogs out their that are much less expensive and easier to take care of.

ok first i ahd a maltese and they do need to be bathed once or 2 times a month and be brushed every week. but all this u are talking about doesnt have to be done every 4 months. unless she or he is going to be a show dog. and yes they cost alot but they are loveable dogs
