Messy bun?!? :)?
There are two ways to make this style. However, they both start off the same. Collect all your hair in a high ponytail. You can do this by flipping your hair upside down and gathering all your hair in one spot. It's helpful to use a paddle brush for this step.
For the first way, wrap your elastic twice around your hair, then pull your ponytail half-way through the elastic. Pull some bits and pieces out from inside the half-ponytail so it's hanging down. Another cool thing is to leave out wisps around the nape of your neck.
For the second way, secure your elastic around your hair tightly into a pontyail.
To continue the second way, coil your hair around the base of your ponytail as if you were putting it in a ballerina bun. Then, flatten the bun to your head and secure with an elastic. Try pinning it with bobby pins- when done well, this helps the look a lot. Pull out bits and pieces and shake your head until you achieve the desired effect.

i did this for a concert once. i had about the same hair as you, a little shorter:
i pulled my hair into a ponytail up high on my head and sprayed it a little bit (not the ponytail but around it). then i separated the ponytail into halves. then i wrapped one half around the base of the ponytail one way and the other half, on top of it, the other way. then i pinned it with bobby pins, pulled out a few stray hairs to make it messier, and sprayed the whole thing about 10 times with mega super ultra hold hairspray. then i pulled my bangs to the side. it looked really cute and stayed up perfectly even after an hour of jumping up and down and screaming. =]

I recomend using Kenra Volume Spray # 25 for holding this style in place. I use this hairspray for every style. I have even fell asleep with my hair up and it still looks the same.

This is a super cute easy way to to it esp. for thick hair.
1. put your hair in a pony tail where ever you want the messy bun to be
2. Braid this hair into one big braid
3. Twist the braid around the pony tail
4. With big bobby pins secure the braid into place around the pony tail holder.
4. The braid will become loose when securing the bobby pins which gives it the messy look but will stay in well because the bobby pins are securing it in to your head.

make a tight ponytail first. Try scrunchy no slip hair ties. Put another hair tie in your r hand and with your left hand twist your pony until you get a little "ball" at the base of the pony then begin to wrap the remaining pony around the "ball or bunch" at the base. When your out of hair to wrap up start to wrap put in the hair tie from your right hand until it is tight. If this does not work for you play with it. What I have given you is the basics. If you still can't do it look for someone who has theirs how you like it and ask them to show you. Don't worry about rejection, they will more than likely view it as a compliment and be happy to help. Good luck!!

Hi there, here's how I do it:
I start with a standard pony tail wrapped really tight.
I take the ends and loosely wrap it around the base of the pony. As you get to the last inch or so make sure that wraps around tightly and secure it with a bobby pin.
Take a few more bobby pins and stick into the sides of the bun making sure to leave the parts furthest from the base loose and messy. Use as many as you need to "secure" it comfortably so it won't unravel. Since you have one lenght of hair you might need to use your fingers to pull some of the strands further out but never all the way out. See how that works for you. All the best of luck!
